Making School Drop-Offs Easier

Mornings can be chaotic - but getting your child to school on time doesn’t have to be a daily struggle. With a simple routine and a little compassion (especially if separation anxiety is in the mix), you can set up smoother, calmer starts to the day.

Here are a few simple strategies to make mornings smoother for everyone:

1. Create a Consistent Morning Routine

Children feel more secure when they know what to expect. Try:

  • Waking up at the same time each day
  • Using a visual checklist (brush teeth, get dressed, etc.)
  • Preparing clothes, bags, and lunches the night before

Limit or avoid screen time in the morning - it’s often more distracting than helpful.

2. Support your Child though Separation Anxiety

If your child struggles with goodbyes: Acknowledge their feelings, be consistent with your goodbyes, and try to keep it short and confident.

We completely understand how emotional it can be to say goodbye, especially when your child is upset. However, delaying the goodbye at drop-off can sometimes make the transition a little harder for them. Rest assured, our staff are always on hand to offer comfort, distraction, and a warm welcome to help your child feel safe and supported. Most children do begin to settle surprisingly quickly once they're in the classroom and engaged with their peers.

3. Acknowledge the Small Victories

Even the small wins matter - like putting on shoes independently or walking into class calmly. A simple “You did that all by yourself!” or “You looked really proud walking in today!” helps children recognise their own progress and feel confident in themselves.

4. Take Care of Yourself, Too

Drop-offs can be emotional for parents too. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed - just know that your presence and patience are already helping your child grow.
