Year 6 Curriculum Overview

Year 6 Long Term Plan

Spring Term 1 - 2019

Another term has flown by for Year 6 and lots of learning has taken place. Our theme of ‘Curiouser and Curiouser’ has informed our writing and guided reading, as well as running through our maths worded problems. We have looked at scale and ratio in maths, using this knowledge to help us with our cookery for our tea party and dress up day. In our writing, we have been creating newspaper reports to explain who stole the Queen of Hearts’ jam tarts and we have looked at different aspects of the Lewis Carroll story in guided reading.

In design and technology, we designed and made a range of Alice in Wonderland themed keyrings. We started off by evaluating existing products and interviewing Year 5 in order to get an idea of what children want in terms of a keyring. We then designed our own. Learning how to use running stitch, back stitch and blanket stitch to join fabric together, we created our masterpieces - they looked great!

To end the half term, we had an Alice in Wonderland dress up day; we came in as characters from the book and created Alice-inspired dances in the hall, made cakes, cookies and sandwiches and finally entertained our parents with our amazing tea party.

Autumn Term 2 - 2018

Year 6 have had an extremely busy half-term, in which we finished off our learning about the Egyptians and moved swiftly on to our thinking about Ingenious Inventors. Our Egyptian learning culminated in a museum of ‘artefacts’ which we had made throughout the term, set up to be viewed by our parents.

We began our theme – Ingenious Inventors - by trying to make batteries out of 2p coins; some of us were more successful than others and had ‘lightbulb moments’ where the LEDs lit up!

The objective of our Design and Technology project was to make a light display product for parents to see on Monday 17th December. We investigated and explored existing Christmas light products and used our research to design and build our own. Working with wood, glue guns and other equipment, we created some interesting and well-built Christmas products.

In addition, this half-term, we visited Fort Purbrook as part of the Havant Borough Council Junior Citizenship Scheme. We all took part in workshops held by the Police, Fire Service, Hampshire Domestic Abuse Agency, RNLI and Neighbourhood Quality Control team. We learnt a lot about how to become a good member of society and how to support and help those around us.

Autumn Term 1 - 2018

Year 6 have been finding out about the Ancient Egyptians this half term and have taken part in many different activities to support their learning. A particular favourite was learning about the process of mummification and the many stages that this involved.

The theme continued with a fun but educational dress-up day, where the children came to school as Ancient Egyptians and made Canopic jars and amulets, and wrote hieroglyphics – amongst other things…

In English, we flew back to the 11th century and learned about Shakespeare’s Macbeth. To begin our learning, the children were entertained by the Young Shakespeare Company, which came to the school and enacted a version of the play where we all got to participate in order to bring the story to life.

This was followed by our own mock battle on the playground, to inspire the children to write descriptive battle scenes.
