Year 2 Curriculum Overview

Year 2 Long Term Plan

Spring 1 - 2019

This term, we have been learning all about London! We have discovered lots of amazing facts about England’s capital city and its famous landmarks, using maps and globes to identify where it is, and comparing the city to Waterlooville. As well as England, we understand that there are three other countries that make up the United Kingdom.

Time-travelling back to 1666, we discovered that modern day London had disappeared! Instead, the city was full of wooden houses built very close together - which was part of the reason it suffered from the spread of a huge fire. As historians, we read an extract of Samuel Pepys’ diary which left us very confused as the language was very different. We enjoyed adapting this old-fashioned diary to help modern day children understand what happened in the Great Fire.

Autumn Term 2 - 2018

Year 2 began the half term looking at the habitats of different British wildlife. To help us investigate where animals live, we went on our first school trip to the New Forest Wildlife Park. We learnt which animals live in our British woodlands and which no longer live here. Although it rained, it didn’t stop us from gathering information to help us to write a leaflet.

We have been introduced to a new religion this term, Judaism. We enjoyed learning about the story of Hanukkah and how it differs from the Christian celebration of advent. We used this information to celebrate how people are different and to recognise differences in our friends.

It was that time of year again, and we got to show all of our parents and peers our wonderful Christmas performance, ‘Born in a Barn’. We had great fun rehearsing the songs and learning our lines with Year 1. Our favourite songs were: ‘A long way on a donkey’ and ‘Don’t worry Mary’. To finish the year, we invited our families to come and listen to our poetry recital. We enjoyed writing our own contemporary poem in the form of a Haiku and sharing an extract from ‘How the Grinch stole Christmas’, which is a classic poem that we learnt in CRAW.

Autumn Term 1 - 2018

This term, Year 2 have been getting to know themselves and others in our first theme, ‘Knowing me, Knowing you’.

As part of our science learning, we have investigated how to keep healthy through eating the correct foods and regular exercise. Using our cutting, slicing and squeezing skills, we made yummy fruit salads and then used the experience to create our first fruit salad recipe.

Science experiments enabled us to see the impact of exercise on our bodies, including how it made us feel. We were super-tired afterwards and our muscles ached!

To finish our theme, we really enjoyed preparing for our music concert. We loved singing the songs and creating our own healthy-living t-shirts especially for the occasion.
